Overview
Media Director is the head of the media department and as such is the visible spokesperson for the department within the media group, to other departments in the agency and to persons/groups outside the agency. This individual is responsible for management of the department’s staffing, personnel decisions, training and professional development, recommending and maintaining appropriate planning research/tools, ensuring that the department’s work is not only of the highest quality, but is also innovative and visionary.
Specific Responsibilities
- Leadership of the Department
- Establish and maintain the department’s philosophy, standards, procedures and policies.
- Be a resource to all members of the department, providing experience, knowledge, instruction and direction as necessary.
- Stimulate and challenge the ideas of the staff particularly among the AMDs and Media Supervisors. Seek to continually improve the department’s work.
- Keep abreast of developments in all areas of media. Encourage implementation of appropriate new/innovative concepts, applications and procedures.
- Manage the department’s organizational structure in order to best utilize available skills, provide opportunities for growth and maximize performance within staffing parameters.
- Manage the department’s budget, allocating appropriately the available funds for salaries, media resources and departmental activities/development.
- Ensure that the media department has the necessary resources to handle all planning and executional needs.
- Leadership Outside the Department
- Work with the agency management team to resolve any issues/problems in order to create a strong and integrated working relationship with all departments.
- Represent the department to the advertising and business communities.
- Represent the department to senior level management at the client.
- Insure that the media department is working effectively with buying partners and vendors.
- New Business
- Lead all new business initiatives.
- Ensure that the thinking in all new business presentations reflects the high level of strategic thinking and innovation.
- Work with the account director on the new business to determine staffing needs and service requirements for each new business win.
- Planning, Implementation and Stewardship
- Maintain a general knowledge and overall perspective of plans and media activity for every client.
- Assist in the resolution of major issues/problems.
- Review all media plans and major documents to ensure that they reflect our high standards of thinking.
- Personnel Administration
- Work with the Human Resources department in developing appropriate recruitment strategies.
- Participate in the interviewing process for final-round prospects at all levels.
- Ensure that all personnel in the department are being evaluated on a regular basis. Review all evaluations prior to issuance.
- Decide upon recommended promotions for employees whose performance and personal growth has demonstrated their ability to perform at the next level.
- Rule on a course of action for employees whose work performance and personal growth is less than satisfactory.
- Work with the Human Resources team for approval of all salary increases.
